Table of Contents
ToggleWhat is a Free Birth?
Free birthing (or unassisted birth) is the art and confidence of a woman birthing without synthetic medicine, restraint or coaching all with no medical personnel being present.
You can define birthed as “the emergence of a new individual From the body of its parent“, you will understand that an Unassisted birth (or Free birth) is that in its rawest form.
Why have an at Home Birth?
Preparing for your first free birth or at home birth experience can be one of the most exciting times of your life.
You get to birth in the comfort of your own home, create a once in a lifetime experience and ultimately break into the depths of your soul.
The benefits to a free birth or at home births are endless.
Starting with the fact that the same hormone oxytocin (AKA the love hormone) released during sex & conception is the same hormones released during labor.
How amazing is that? Do me a favor and don’t read the next paragraph before giving yourself a big hug!
Benefits of a Free Birth or At Home Birth:
Familiar and Comfortable Environment:
Giving birth at home allows the mother to remain in a familiar and comfortable environment, which can help reduce stress and anxiety. Being in a place where the mother feels safe and at ease can potentially promote a smoother labor process.
Control and Autonomy:
Home births often provide the birthing person more control over the birthing process. They can choose who is present, the atmosphere, and the labor positions that are most comfortable for them. This can lead to a sense of empowerment and autonomy during childbirth.
Personalized Care:
Home births often involve a midwife or a team of midwives who provide personalized, one-on-one care throughout the pregnancy, labor, and postpartum period. This can foster a strong and trusting relationship between the birthing person and their healthcare provider.
Reduced Medical Interventions:
Home births tend to have lower rates of medical interventions such as cesarean sections, epidurals, and inductions. Some people prefer this more natural approach to childbirth, as they believe it aligns with their birth preferences and philosophy.
Family Involvement:
At-home births invite a family-centered experience which allows loved ones to be present and actively involved in the birth process. This can create a more intimate and supportive atmosphere for the birthing person.
Free Birth & At Home Births vs Hospital Births
To birth at home is an act of self-love and resilience without a doubt.
Most hospitals can provide a sense of peace and security to most expectant mothers in general because most employed by
hospitals are thought to be professional and therefore of great use especially to an expectant mom with previous health difficulties.
It’s important to remember that while there are benefits to home births, they could also present potential risks and complications.
However, this is primarily dependent on the overall health and even knowledge of the expectant mother.
All decisions surrounding the success of an at home birth must be aligned to your individual needs as the expectant mother.
Confirmation of a free birth should be made after thorough consideration of an individual healths and medical history,
This decision is best made after consulting with qualified healthcare professionals.
In some cases, a hospital or birthing center might be a safer option, particularly for pregnancies with higher risk factors.
The ultimate decision to give birth at home, within a birthing center, or hospital is best made after careful consideration and by the expectant mother herself.
Once you are informed of all possibilities and opportunities surrounding your free birth or at home birth, you will have the confidence to make the best decision for you.

Home Birth Midwife for Free Birth
Home birth midwives, often referred to as certified professional midwives (CPMs) or licensed midwives, operate under wide or varying regulations and state laws in the United States.
As always, It is paramount to research and understand the specific laws and regulations pertaining to home birth midwives in your state, as they can greatly impact the quality and safety of care provided during home births.
Consulting with healthcare professionals, midwifery organizations, and legal experts can help you navigate the complexities of home birth regulations in your area.
Certain laws can impact their scope of practice, education, licensure, and the care they provide to pregnant individuals during home births.
Here are some facts about home birth midwives based on state laws:
Collaborative Agreements:
In some states, home birth midwives are required to have collaborative agreements or working relationships with physicians.
These agreements may be necessary for consultation or transfer of care in case complications arise during labor.
- This can be very beneficial long term especially if the collective of hospital personnel agrees on the importance of respecting the autonomy of individual midwifery practice.
Educational Requirements:
States that license home birth midwives often have varying educational requirements. Some states require midwives to complete accredited midwifery programs, pass exams, and meet specific clinical experience criteria.
- Back to the egregious standards that are typically put in place which creates added barriers for aspiring African American midwives.
Legal Protection:
The legal status of home birth midwives can vary. In states where they are recognized and regulated, midwives may have legal protection to practice within their defined scope of practice.
- In states without regulation, midwives might operate in a legal gray area… this reality can only serve women as a whole if midwives who represent various ethnicities are including in the creation of said laws that protect.
Insurance and Reimbursement:
Reimbursement for midwifery services can vary based on state laws and insurance policies. Some states require insurance companies to cover midwifery care, while others might not offer reimbursement for home births.
- This is because Insurance companies are typically in close cahoots with hospitals. The hospitals and insurance companies are businesses at the end of the day.
- With that being said, many midwives fear taking insurance due to being limited (once again) in their own individual scope of practice.
Licensure and Regulation:
- The regulation of home birth midwives varies significantly from state to state. Some states have specific licensure for CPMs or licensed midwives, while others might not recognize or regulate them at all.
- From my understanding, the states/cities that have the highest population of African Americans tend to have the most egregious (and sometimes even unnecessary) standards for licensure for CPMs.
Scope of Practice:
The scope of practice for home birth midwives can differ based on state laws.
Some states allow midwives to manage low-risk pregnancies and attend home births, while others might have restrictions on the types of care they can provide or the conditions that qualify for home birth.
For example, here in Arkansas unlike in other states, midwives are not allowed to carry or administer IVs.
Side Note:
Are you a mother looking to have the funds in place to hire the doula/ midwife of your choosing?
Instead of having a baby shower where people give you clothes, etc that the baby will outgrow quickly, how about everyone pitching in to pay for your doula/ midwifery costs?
It’s perfect if you have to choose between being able to safely birth in the comfort of your home OR having a bunch of gifts that you or your baby may or may not even remember down the road. Think about it!
How You Can Prepare for Your Free Birth or at Home Birth Experience:
a step-by-step comprehensive outline to help you prepare for your best birth possible:
Step 1. Educate Yourself on Free Birth or At Home Birth:
Start by thoroughly researching the concept of free birthing and understanding the potential risks and benefits.
Read books, articles , and reliable sources about childbirth, the stages of labor, and possible complications.
Apart of educating yourself also looks like delving into shadow work (tag my book).
As mentioned previously, this ultimate guide is the pink-print for the foundation to be able to achieve a natural birth.
It is also wise to connect with other women who support home births or whom have had one themselves-like myself.
Step 2. Seek Holistic Professional Advice for At Home Births:
While you’re planning a free birth, it’s essential to have prenatal care from a healthcare provider.
like a traditional centered midwife, naturopathic doctor, or even a medical care provider that supports your decision for home birth.
Even though you won’t be delivering in a hospital setting, regular prenatal check-ups can help ensure ultimate health.
This will allow you to close any gaps within your health as a whole by identifying potential issues early on.
Step 3. Assemble Your Birth Team for Your Free Birth:
Decide who you want to have with you during the birthing process. This might include your partner, a close friend, and a doula for emotional and physical support.
Ensuring you have a solid support system, a village to be interdependent upon and the confidence to believe in you is key.
This is not to say that you can’t give birth all on your lonesome if you had to… because you most certainly can! Most women however prefer a few support people to surround them.
The most potent force in the universe that can move the process of your labor toward your desired outcome is love.
By taking responsibility for ensuring you are surrounded by a limited but quality amount of individuals who only want the best for you, you allow the magic of birth to truly begin!
Step 4. Create a birth plan:
Babies come when they want to!
If you speak to any mother who had a successful at home birth, she will tell you having a birth plan is to an extent pointless.
This is because it is absolutely not the same as being prepared mentally, physically, emotionally, etc!
Nevertheless, you should certainly discuss your preferences and expectations for your unassisted birth.
This ensures you are on the same page with your trusted doula or perhaps traditional centered midwife.
Consider factors like:
1 location (home, birthing center, etc.), who will be present (partner, family, friends), the ambiance (lighting, music, etc.), and any specific comfort measures you’d like to have available.
Step 5: Prepare Your Birthing Space:
Choose a comfortable and safe location for the birth. Doing a deep clean in your home and decluttering is perfect to prepare for the arrival of a new born.
Ensure it is clean and well-equipped with essential supplies and any other items you may need during labor.
Step 6. Learn Relaxation Techniques:
Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and visualization to help you manage pain and stay calm during labor.
Step 7. Know The Signs of Labor:
The onset of labor can be different for every woman! For me personally, I lost my mucus plug RIGHT before going straight into labor. Some women can lose their mucus plugs and not go into labor at all.
Remember: Birth is a marathon not a race,
but familiarizing yourself with the signs and stages of labor can certainly be beneficial and build more confidence.
Getting involved in birth-worker networks will pay off because child birth education classes are not created all equal!
When your goal is a free or at home birth, you want to find one that encourages an empowering philosophy surrounding women’s bodily autonomy.
Step 8. Attend Childbirth Classes:
Attending childbirth classes can provide valuable information and support, as well as an opportunity to connect with other expectant parents
You will receive the best childbirth education when the the class is taught by a holistic doula or midwife
This is as opposed to hospital personnel. Keep this in mind as you scope out the best class to take.
As always fathers and partners are always and typically more than welcome to tag along!
Step 9. Prepare for emergencies:
Packing a backup hospital bag can be ideal especially if you have underlying concerns. This is also ideal if you just want to feel secure knowing you have a backup plan in place.
Know the contact information for local emergency services and have a transportation plan to reach a hospital quickly, if needed. Any doula and/ or midwife you hire should be able to easily and readily help you with these matters.
Step 10. Stay physically active:
Engaging in regular physical activity throughout your pregnancy helps to maintain your overall health and increase your endurance for labor. Remember: Birth is a Marathon! and for marathons one must train.
Step 11. Nourish your body:
Eat a balanced and nutritious diet to support you and your baby’s health during pregnancy and labor.
Be sure to stay away from synthetic minerals, chemicals, etc. Eating whole and raw foods is always your best pick when it comes to preparing for a successful pregnancy, labor, birth and postpartum healing experience.
Step 12. Hire a Doula ASAP:
While you’re free birthing, you may still want to consider having a doula present. Doulas can provide valuable emotional and physical support during labor and birth as previously discussed.
Taking the time to get to know a doula before you reach your third trimester would be very wise.
It makes everything easier on everyone involved and makes the process of assessing needs, prenatal appointments, etc…
Step 13. Practice positive affirmations:
Start by only consuming positive birth stories/ videos. Only surround yourself with positivity that serves to boost your confidence and belief in your body’s ability to birth naturally. It’s just that simple.
Step 14. Trust your instincts:
Get ready to lean into the depths of your soul.
This is why actively undergoing shadow work is highly beneficial for the pregnant woman’s psyche!
This allows any current patterns holding you back from being your best self to be addressed, reassessed, tweaked or completely turned inside out for your betterment.
Throughout the process, trust your body and instincts. Listen to your intuition and make decisions that feel right for you and your baby.
Giving Birth Photos
It is always ideal to have someone on camera duty for when you and your baby’s big day arrives! Make sure you have someone to record or take photos that will be precious memories in the long term.
Posting these amazing moments will then help inspire and remind women around the world just how capable they are.
Cool Tip: Find a local state park to go to and experiment with maternity photos as well. Something about nature surrounding a pregnant woman just makes sense and offers a sense of comfort, sensuality and serene beauty.
Photos of you giving birth or maternity photos taken in nature herself will last a lifetime!
PostPartum Depression
The best way to negate postpartum depression is preparing for pregnancy in the best way possible to begin with. Detoxing your body prior to conceiving serves wonders?
While you focus on a clean diet, you can also begin to detox the environment around you as well.
You can do this by decluttering spaces in your home or by cutting off toxic associations that keep you stagnant.
You know..
Ties that need to be cut with people that no longer can support where you want to be in life.
God has for you in order for you to GROW, baby.
When you can prepare properly in all ways (financially, mentally, emotionally and physically),
you can almost indefinitely negate most if not all postpartum depression along with the proper support for healing postpartum.
Free Birth Stories
Free birth stories are empowering, comforting and a reminder of your innate power as a woman.
I included one of my at home birth stories in my book because it was through this experience that I was led to becoming a doula in the first place.
What are the Risks of Free Birth or At Home Birth?
Simply put, if you have chronic health issues you will want to monitor your gestational journey more closely.
Certain chronic health issues can put you in the category of a ‘High Risk Pregnancy’. When this happens most modern medical doctors will shy you away from attempting an at home birth.
This is why as a doula and wholistic birth-keeper, I recommend you find the closest thing to a naturopathic doctor or a “seasoned” traditional midwife… or better yet find both: a medical doctor and a holistic wellness centered practitioner.
This is because with herbs and properly detoxing the body, you can change your health conditions over time through diligence and eventually your entire life.
Once you have discovered the root cause of your chronic health condition you can properly treat it holistically; then certain medical doctors will have high tech instruments that can best identity this root cause and therefore track it more readily/ easily.
If you are knew to these concepts, you will want to consult and also educate yourself on holistic wellness regimens related to your own specific needs! There are holistic remedies (especially related to diet change) that can help ANY ailments within the body.
In Closing
Achieving free birth or at-home birth is perfect for those who are interested in a more personalized and intimate birthing experience.
I will always encourage any woman who is low-risk, who actively takes responsibility for her own health, and is in connection with other women who support her wholeheartedly, to plan in as far in advance as possible to have the free birth or at home birth of her dreams!
It’s important to note that home births are not suitable for everyone, and individuals should consult with healthcare professionals to make informed decisions based on their medical history and circumstances.
So take life slow, focus on your breath work, be in communion with women of like mind, and focus on everything and anything that is good for you moment to moment.
Do not feel guilty.
Learn how best you can honor your hormonal changes and the physical vessel that God has given you to be able to bring life into the world in the first place.
Be willing to break into the depths of your soul!
As women, we deserve to birth freely within our power and for this experience to not be robbed from us.
We also must take responsibility for our health and the connections we build with other women.
These connections will only serve to create the strong fortresses women need long term to feel confident in the first place to be able to birth on their own terms.
