This is one of the most common questions women ask in the final stage of pregnancy.
The honest answer is that you cannot force labor to begin before your body is ready. However, you can support your body in preparing naturally and comfortably.
Disclaimer: As a doula and mother who has experienced two natural home births, I personally prefer approaches that work with the body’s natural labor process rather than attempting to force labor before the body is ready.
Most natural labor preparation techniques focus on helping your body relax, encouraging good baby positioning, improving circulation, and lowering stress so your body can move into labor more easily when the time is right.
Labor is not something you control. It is something your body moves into when everything is aligned.
If you are looking for ways to induce labor at home, you are probably feeling a mix of anticipation, discomfort, and excitement as you get closer to birth.
There comes a point in late pregnancy where everything starts to feel like you are waiting for something you cannot fully control.
Your body feels heavier, sleep becomes less comfortable, and every small sensation makes you pause and wonder if labor might be starting.
Use a Yoga Ball to Encourage Baby Positioning
One of the simplest tools I always recommend is a yoga ball.
Sitting on a yoga ball allows your hips to stay open and encourages gentle movement in your pelvis. This can help your baby settle into a better position for labor.
What I personally love about it is how natural it feels. You don’t force anything. Simply sitting, moving gently, and allowing your body to relax is enough to zero in on a balanced mental space.
I recommend trying slow hip circles, gentle bouncing while sitting, or leaning forward while resting your upper body on a bed or chair for support.
Many women find that this alone helps reduce discomfort in the lower back and hips.
This is one of the most practical ways to induce labor at home naturally because it supports your body without pressure. I personally used a birthing ball while in early labor and I absolutely know it contributed to me having such a blissful exilerating birthing experience.

I’ve also linked the yoga mat I personally use because it’s lightweight enough to take to the park, on walks, while traveling, or anywhere I want a comfortable space to stretch, move, and stay connected to my natural wellness practices.
Another good companion to a birth ball is a yoga mat. The yoga mat I used throughout my own pregnancy became one of my favorite wellness tools because it was easy to bring to the park, while traveling, or anywhere I wanted a comfortable space to stretch, move, and connect with my body.
Take Relaxing Walks to Encourage Natural Movement
Walking is one of the most well-known natural labor preparation tips, and for good reason. During my final stretch of both of my pregnancies I went on hour long or more walks and hikes in nature.
I always made sure I remained safe by either bringing a stick or knife with me if going alone or simply going with someone who had protection as well if the walk was long or in new territory.
When you walk, you are allowing gravity and movement to gently encourage your baby to move downward into position.
But what matters most is not intensity. It is comfort. I walked in good tennis shoes or in my favorite chaco sandals but here are a more affordable pick (but same quality).
Even short and slow walks can help your body feel looser and more relaxed. It can also help you mentally process emotions and feel more connected to your body.
Always remember to bring hydration along the way, include some electrolyte packs or simply eat some fresh fruit before and afterwards.
Some women prefer quiet walks in nature, while others simply walk around their home. Both are perfectly fine.
The goal is not to trigger labor but to support your body gently in preparation.
One more piece of Info: Comfort matters when it comes to consistent movement, and a supportive pregnancy band can help many women continue enjoying gentle walks and other daily activities with greater ease during the later stages of pregnancy.
Try Prenatal Yoga and Gentle Stretching
Prenatal yoga is one of my favorite ways to support natural labor preparation because it connects movement with breath and awareness.
One of my favorite channels to literally CONSUME throughout all trimesters was Sarah Wes. Her videos are gentle but effective enough to increase mind-body awareness for prenatal support.
If you are already a yoga girlie then I’m sure you will love her channel!
Certain yoga positions can help open the hips, release tension in the pelvis, and encourage relaxation in the body.
Some gentle movements include child pose, cat cow stretches, supported squats, and slow side stretches.
What makes prenatal yoga powerful is that it also calms your mind. And a calm mind supports a relaxed and labor-ready body.
Generally speaking, the more consistent you are with yoga the more effecitvely you can train your mind to ride the powerful waves on contraction during labor.
This combination is what makes labor preparation feel more natural and less stressful.
All you need for effective and daily yoga is a quality yoga mat and a pair of yoga blocks for when the pressure is on and when you will likely prefer the extra support for increased mobility.
This is especially ideal for when your belly begins to stick out over your feet ahaha.
Drink Red Raspberry Leaf Tea
This is probably my all time favorite way to induce labor.
Our uterus is technically the only reginerating muscle within our bodies that we cannot externally workout. How fascinating, right?!
So nature has provided us with herbs that support toning our uterus in preparation for labor. One of those main herbs are red raspberry leaf.
I consumed this herb from the ending of my second trimester throughout the ending of my third and I can honestly say it was one of my best decisions.
I still drink it today for general menstrual support month to month or add it to one of my monthly hair tea rinses or yoni steams.
Red raspberry leaf tea is commonly used to support the body in the final weeks of pregnancy.
I always encourage viewing it as a calming ritual rather than something that forces labor.
Lastly, this herb can best be taken during postpartum to support milk production by providing essential minerals.
WARNING: it is not however recommended to consumer red raspberry leaf too early in your pregnancy so it is recommended to only consume after the 1st trimester at minimum.
Many women include herbal teas in their late pregnancy routine as part of natural labor preparation.
The tea can be enjoyed warm while resting or during quiet moments in the day. If you eventually plan on adding it to your at home herbal pharmacy, here one of the best tea sets I own.
Some women find it helps them feel more grounded and intentional as they prepare for birth.
It is important that you ensure your tea ends in ‘leaf’ specifically and is organic. Here is the brand I personally used as it lasted me throguhout both pregnancies.
Use Massage and Acupressure for Relaxation
Massage can be incredibly helpful in late pregnancy because it helps release tension that builds up in the body.
A tense body can feel harder to relax into the natural process of labor. Stay loose, ladies. No, seriously why do you think sex itself is one of the ways a woman can induce her own labor effortlessly.
Usually the better sex is with your partner the more likely a woman can ride the waves of contractions (speaking from personal experience).
During both of my successful pregnancies I had prenatal massages, but with my second pregnancy specifically, I had both acupuncture and chiropractic adjustment along with prenatal massage.
These are some of the best ways to induce labor at home naturally.
Half of this at the time was generally not covered by insurance so it would really help if you have a health savings account where money for specific services can be reimbursed to you.
Both of these treatments combined along with yoga every other day helped prime my body for the most blissful 2nd home birthing experience possible.
Massage and acupressure focus on helping the body soften and release stress in a way the body can navigate deeply.
A monthly prenatal massage is most ideal at minimum as massages in general are great for lymphatic drainage supporting natural bodily detoxification.
This may include a gentle lower back massage, foot massage, shoulder relaxation, or soft pressure on specific points.
Even better if you have a partner close to provide you these mini massages in between the professional ones as well.
Reminder: The goal is not stimulation. The goal is deep relaxation. and that is what these techniques support most for mind body awareness.

Prioritize Rest and Nervous System Relaxation
This is one of the most important parts of natural labor preparation that is often overlooked.
Your nervous system plays a huge role in how your body responds in late pregnancy.
For example, on both of the days I went into labor, I distinctly remember not feeling the need to be too busy throughout the day. I didn’t feel like doing as much nesting as the previous days, etc.
When you are stressed, your body stays tense. When you are relaxed, your body feels safe and oddly embracing my nesting instinct gave me that sense of comfort.
For those who may be new here, nesting is the natural instinct many women experience during pregnancy that motivates them to prepare their home, organize their space, and create a calm, supportive environment before welcoming their baby.
That sense of safety is important for labor preparation.
Resting, slowing down, and creating quiet moments in your day can make a big difference. Think of it like this.
Every step you take to create a peaceful environment helps signal safety to your nervous system, allowing your body to approach labor with greater confidence and ease.
Afterall, a woman’s birth envrionement is crucial and I think this may be part of the reason more women are not giving birth at home.
Even naps without guilt can support your body more than you realize. Prepare your environment. Have fun with it and put your birth team to work!
Rest is not laziness. Rest is preparation.
Eat Nourishing Foods and Stay Hydrated
One of my favorite all around health staples that are perfect for prenatal nutition is seamoss.
When it comes to the best ways to induce labor at home naturally, a mother must prioritize proper nutrition.
I think preparing it from its raw form is best practice and so I recomment locating it at your local seamoss/wellness shop or farmers market. If you want a quicker but just as effective approach of consuming this minerals based supplement, I recommend a good incapsulated brand.
Your body is doing a lot of work in late pregnancy, so it needs proper nourishment and hydration. A second favorite of mine is juice plus.
Staying hydrated supports energy levels and helps your body function more smoothly.
The best way to stay hydrated is to always have seeded fruit on hand, electrolytes, coconut water and a 100% copper water bottle.
Benefits of Using a Copper Water Bottle
For centuries, copper vessels have been used in Ayurvedic traditions as part of a mindful hydration practice.
Some women enjoy incorporating a copper water bottle into their daily wellness routine as a simple reminder to slow down, hydrate, and reconnect with their bodies.

I always recommend a clean and tidy space for your birth environment.
This is typically not an issue for mamas, especially after their nesting instinct kicks in.
Another factor that should not be ignored is the people you have around you. Some people (family, friends or assiociates) can influence our anxiety levels for the better or the worse.
It doesn’t always mean they are a bad person just not the best fit for your intimate birth experience. It is okay to make last minute changes if they are for your peace of mind, always.
The best ways to induce labor at home naturally focus on safety first
Remember: If they truly want the best for you they will have no problem respecting your wishes! Never be afraid to self-advocate, a safe and efficient labor starts with you.
The wrong people in your space can absolutely drain your energy more than necessary. This is something we simply can NOT have.
Practical tip: Surround yourself with people you would feel comfortable taking a number 2 in front of.
Seriously it is that serious (You already know this if this isn’t your first rodeo becoming a mother).
A calm environment helps your nervous system relax, which supports natural preparation for labor.
Here are some of my favorite practical tools that you and your birth team. These along with gentle practices like the following can aid you in creating a serene labor experience.
Simple tips for creating a calm birth environment include: dimming the lights, playing soft music, keeping your space clean and comfortable, and using calming natural scents if safe for you.
When your environment feels peaceful, your mind then body can easily follow.
Try Deep Breathing and Hypnobirthing Techniques
Breathing is one of the simplest and most powerful tools you can use in late pregnancy.
This is a technique that is best and most ideally practiced troughout all trimesters of pregnancy.
Knowing how to calm the mind in the heat of anxiety is truly a woman’s super-power.
Mastering such dictates how she controls any given outcome of what happens to her in her own immediate environment.
Slow and deep breathing helps calm your nervous system and creates a sense of safety in your body. There are multiple breathing techniques such as the box breathing method.
This is when you inhale through the nose for 4 seconds, hold your breath for 4 and exhale for 4. Breathing techniquees such as these are excellent ways to induce labor at home naturally.
You can alternate this with breathing in for 4 holding for 3 and exhaling for 6. Longer exhales signify to the brain deeper relief. Control your mind, and the body will follow.
Hypnobirthing techniques often include deep breathing, visualization, and positive affirmations that help you feel emotionally prepared for labor.
These practices are not just for labor itself. They help prepare your mind and body together. Two tips:
if possible, add aromatherapy to your routine and listen to hypnobirthing affirmations. These tips and mindset assist you in creating the first calm birth environment that which begins in the mind.
Intimacy and Oxytocin Support
Oxytocin… also know as ‘the love hormone’.
Every hug, meaningful conversation, act of affection, and moment of connection encourages the body to produce oxytocin.
It is the hormone responsible for also getting our babies here in the most gentle and most effective way possible.
It is wise to protect anything that enhances what triggers the oxytocin hormone as bonding and emotional connection
You can do this again by first preparing mentally and then having strong boundaries in place for your birth environment.
This ideally starts with the individuals you allow in your laboring space.
Gentle intimacy and affection can support relaxation and emotional safety, which may help your body feel more prepared.
Your doulas and/ or midwives typically will assist in protecting the expansion of such hormone for the mother.
This could include your birth team gently relieving physical pressure, speaking verbal affirmations over you, using her rebozo or simply being present with you while you breath through each contraction.
This can also include cuddling, bonding time, emotional closeness, or a safe connection with your partner.
The focus here is comfort and connection, not pressure.
Hence, why choosing the right birth team can truly make or break your birth experience.
Through it all, it is best practice to remain mentally-centered. This allows a laboring mother to be able to listen to her body as it will not lead her astray.
Lastly, when it comes to intimacy…
sex and semen can also be used to naturally induce labor since the feeling is a natural and major oxytocin booster as well.
What NOT to Do to Induce Labor Naturally
It is important to be just as mindful of what to avoid concerning ways to induce labor at home naturally.
As a general rule of thumb, anything that feels extreme, stressful, unsafe, or overwhelming is best to be avoided.
Lots of women may take pride in lifting heavy in the gym during pregnancy. However, as a doula I do not recommend such. Doing so can lead to a tight pelvic floor and possible straining.
Afterall, consistent yoga, brief walks and proper nutrition can help condition and prime the body just fine for birth,
Your body responds best to calm support, not pressure or anxiety.
Gentle Reminder: Trusting your body is more powerful than trying to force timing of labor.
Signs Labor May Be Approaching
Instead of focusing only on induction, it can also help to recognize when your body is naturally preparing.
It is so important that during that final stretch you respond to life and your environment intentionally.
When you least expect it labor can occur especially if you are already under any type of intense emotion.
Some signs include increased pelvic pressure, Preparatory (mild, practice or mini) contractions, nesting instincts, changes in discharge, and emotional sensitivity.
These signs may not mean labor is imminent, however they often mean your body is slowly preparing for labor. And it just may begin sooner than you expect so preparation is key.

Your body is not late and it is not behind, It’s preparing on its own time and in its own way.
